Science - Friction and Force

Carpet Bowls - By Carla McIntyre

CARPET BOWLING

On Wednesday 29 March at 10:00 my class went to the hall to learn about carpet bowls. It was for a science experiment about friction and force.

Carpet bowls is indoor bowling. We received two bowls and Mr Hall taught us about the weight on the sides of the bowls. The side with the small white circle carries the most weight and is called the bias.

This means that when the bowl starts slowing down, the bowl will start to roll to the side of the bias.

Mr Hall said that the weight has to be on the inside. He also mentioned that you had to roll the bowl on an angle to make it reach the jack!

I also had to think about the force I was putting behind the bowl to make sure it didn't go off the mat.

I found this challenging, but the more times I rolled the bowl, I found I was getting better at it.

Lost at Sea, by Paul Yim

Wow! I meet the oceanographer. It was Friday 24 of March the senior syndicate of Sunnybrae Normal School had to meet at the hall and listen to an oceanographer and watch a performance called Lost at Sea.

First we meet the oceanographer, he told us the fastest animal in the sea. It was a whale and the shark. Then the oceanographer told us ducks drift faster than other plastic toys because the duck’s head acts like a sail.

After lunch we saw a performance about “Lost at sea”. There was someone called Duck Boy who was from Australia and has lots of ducks but he doesn't like it because his dad gave him duck things. In Scotland there was Cursty who wanted to find a duck but she can't. It was so fun.

What I really enjoyed was a Duck Boy taking photos with lots of ducks.I also enjoyed Cursty from Scotland when she bit one of the duck’s heads off. (Which was made out of chocolate). The chocolate duck was so cool I wish I could eat it!

The performance was fun and I really enjoyed it but sometimes I was little bit bored.

Performance - Lost at Sea, By Carla McIntrye

I can’t wait to meet a real oceanographer! On Friday 24 March, at 12:00 the Senior Syndicate went to the hall to listen to an oceanographer and to watch a performance called Lost At Sea.

First, the oceanographer told us that the ocean has a trillion trillion litres of water and that Gyres are big whirlpools and sometimes they can create islands of junk!

Afterwards, we watched the performance Lost At Sea. At the start there was a big fight to get all the little yellow ducks that the children placed out. The story was of the 29,000 little yellow ducks. My favourite part was when Cursty bit off the head of a chocolate duck when she got angry at Duck Boy, I also liked it when Duck Boy flipped the ducks down from the post in his bedroom. At first I thought that Duck Boy was going to move to Scotland.

I think that the ducks are famous in their own rights because they were spotted where the Titanic sank. I also think that if you sold a single duck for $100 it would not pay that much, it would pay like $15

Performance - Lost at Sea, By Annabel Barlow

Wow! This is so interesting!!!!One beautiful sunny day the Sunnybrae Seniors and RM 9 went to a performance called Lost At Sea and to see
an oceanographer on Friday 24 March 2017. We were doing it because we wanted to learn more about the 29,000 lost yellow rubber ducks! It took place in  the Sunnybrae Hall.

First we went to see the oceanographer before lunch! Yah! He told us the fastest animal in the sea! It is a whale, it can swim 10 meters with just a flip of its tail! (which is one second) Wow! That's so interesting! I also learnt about gyres. Gyres are like whirlpools that carry all the  junk from everywhere! Sometimes there is so much junk it can turn into a junk island!!!!

After lunch we went to the show called lost at sea.The characters  names were Cursty and Duck Boy. Cursty lived in Scotland and Duck Boy lived in Australia. My first favourite part was when Curstyy bit the head off a chocolate duck when she got angry. My second favourite part was when at the end she finally found a duck, but Duck Boy got it first! She chased him outside and came back, this time Cursty had the duck! That was the end!!

In summary I really liked the Lost At Sea performance and oceanographer discussion - it was so fun! But also interesting! I really hope they come back next year because the show was so funny but also interesting at the same time! Also the oceanographer was very, very informative! I think that meeting an oceanographer is an amazing privilege!!!
